Rapid devaluation of the Mexican peso sharply increases the need for scholarships for the mostly-Mexican student body.
- 1980Reisner retires; Hurricane Allen
David R. Gifford succeeds Reisner, who becomes the first director of a new office of development. Hurricane Allen damages the campus. In September Mrs. Peggy Bell is elected chairperson of the board — her first acts include improvements to the dorms.
